New Horizons

Spinal Cord Injury Community

The Ryan Shazier Foundation
This year we had the honor and privilege of attempting a bold experiment: teaching our brand of improvisation to help heal the broken spirits and bodies who are a part of the Ryan Shazier Foundation For Spinal Rehabilitation.
We did not know if our approach would work with the Spinal Cord Injury Community. We did not know if we could be effective facilitators to this community delivering our program through Zoom.
We stepped out onto this very shaky limb and were thrilled to see how quadriplegics and paraplegics took to the content of our program.
We want to thank the Ryan Shazier Foundation for having the courage to step out onto this limb with us, and we want to express deep heartfelt thanks to each member of our pilot program who taught us so much and experienced new opportunities in expanding to new levels of joy and personal agency in their lives.
Comments From Participants
“…a profound and surprisingly practical experience in learning how to let go, reconnect with play, and become more present with yourself and other people”.
- Ryan D.
“I would tell people with a spinal cord injury (SCI) to give this program a shot, as it can help them to think differently about their injury and their life experiences, which in turn can help to support others who have a SCI.”
- Chris M.
“It changed me!! Just tonight. Just after one week. I feel like a
completely different person already, and I love this!”
- Adrain L.
